spring flowers

the groundhog was right and now spring is in full swing in the nation's capital! a morning walk through the city revealed the season's delightful blooms

 between the cracks in the sidewalk...

and along side the road.

 

the smell of jonquils perfumed the air.

some crocus pushed through,

and the hyacinths stood out.

there was an unbelievable magnolia grandiflora, who's blooms have not been browned by a frost this year.

this star magnolia shined!

when we turned the corner, we discovered a lovely decaying garden wall and urn.

a few weeks ago i went down to the national mall for a little museum hopping. i dont know if these benches are recent acquisitions by the castle or not, but i never noticed them before: they are quite beautiful and unexpected!

• dc-ists: head to eastern market: the indoor part-none of the outdoor vendors will be there today because of the heat. i'm buying raviolis:every flavor...sunflowers...maybe some fresh fish and herbs...definately some baked goods.

•walk at the linn county gardeners walk and check out six different gardens that offer ideas for your own. 10-4

•self guide yourself through 340+ gardens at buffalo garden walk, the largest garden tour of it's kind in the country today and sunday.

capitol riverfront market

last week was the opening of yet another farmer's market in washington dc: the capitol riverfront farmer's market at new jersey avenue, se and m street, se (navy yard metro). the new farmer's market will be open every thursday 3-7 through november 18th. there will be fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, breads, baked goods, herbs, spices, pickles, olive oil, jam, honey, flowers, prepared food and more! the goal is to feature local produce and raise awareness of local speciality products. 

cherry blossoms

the heat...the wind...the rain...the wind...the cherry blossoms are gone! they were gone by last tuesday downtown, even though the national cherry blossom festival ended this weekend, and the few that made it through the weekend are, unfortunately, in the gutter.

united states botanical garden

here is a quick shot while driving past the united states botanical garden earlier this week. the botanical garden is a great place to visit in dc this time of year because it is so warm and very humid inside due to the orchid show: great for soothing winter's dry skin and blistered spirit here on the snowbound east coast. i heart those crazy-huge greenhouses!

liberty market

penn quarter in dc is one of my favorite neighborhoods. i have been clubbing there since the 80's (?)...the national portrait gallery and museum of american art are there, as are hundreds of great restaurants and bars...i love basketball and the verizon center is on the corner. i do a great art show, the downtown holiday market there in december. the cowgirl creamery cheese shop rocks! the one thing they don't have there is a raw food source: a grocery store. welcome, liberty market! liberty market is a new farmer's market open tuesdays from 2:30-6:30 at the corner of 7th & k streets on the grounds of the historic society of washington, dc at mt. vernon square. help promote community sustainability by supporting your local farmers, musicians and artists!
